![]() | Rats can be found anywhere offering food, water & shelter. They are rapid breeders with 3-6 litters per year, litters ranging from 6-11, sexually maturing at 8-12 weeks. Rats are a major pest due to the damage they cause, the diseases they carry & the parasites that live on them. Rodents gnaw regularly, as their teeth continue to grow throughout their lives, through wire, wood, pipes, cardboard etc. The diseases they carry include Weil’s Disease, Leptospiral Jaundice & Salmonella. Many diseases are shed in rat urine which is then transmitted to humans by contact with contaminated water, moist soil or direct contact. It is an offence to knowingly harbour rats in any premises under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act, you can be prosecuted. |
![]() | Mice can squeeze through gaps as small as 7mm (the size of a pen) and are difficult to exclude. Mice are sporadic feeders and tend to sample food little & often, quickly losing interest in one food source. Mice urinate constantly & produce around 80 droppings a day compared to a rat’s 40. They too are prolific breeders, a pair of mice and their offspring can produce up to 2,000 young in a year. |
![]() | A queen wasp starts building a nest in early spring, starting off the size of a golf ball & ends up growing to hold up to 10,000 wasps though an average nest holds about 5,000. The cold weather kills off all workers and males but the fertilised queens survive & hibernate the winter to start new colonies in the spring. Old nests are not re-used. |
![]() | Squirrels can cause serious damage to roof spaces. Entering by climbing walls and jumping from overhanging trees/bushes they chew woodwork, strip electrical insulation (posing a fire hazard), tear up fibreglass insulation to build a drey & occasionally drown in cold water tanks. Any gaps need to be blocked & trees cut back. When proofing, measures should be tailored to a specific site as the determination, ingenuity & sharp teeth of squirrels should not be underestimated. Squirrels breed twice a year with the average litter bearing 3-4 young. |
![]() | Bedbugs are nocturnal parasites, all stages feed on mammalian blood. They hide by day in crevices in beds, furniture, wallpaper, skirting boards and emerge when hungry. Bites may cause allergic reactions but are not a known disease carrier. Infestations are often associated with hotels, hostels and may be carried on luggage, Adult bedbugs can live a year between meals so don’t think they will die if a room is left unused for a while. |
![]() | All fleas are wingless, flattened laterally (tall & thin) & vary from grey to a mahogany colour. They have long, strong back legs developed for jumping. The adults feed on blood but the larvae do not. The most common fleas are dog and cat fleas. |
![]() | Cockroaches are very resilient creatures. They can live a month without food and 2 weeks without water. Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal and like warm, humid conditions. They tend to spend their day hiding in cracks & crevices around sinks, fridges, drains, cookers etc. and come out to feed during the night. They are known to carry diseases such as Dysentery, Gastro Enteritis, Typhoid & Poliomyelitis. |
